The region
+ MoreThe twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth have welcomed visitors for centuries, thanks to their dramatic scenery and unique charm. Highlights include the iconic Victorian cliff railway, the spectacular Valley of the Rocks, and the riverside walks at Watersmeet—popular spots that dr...aw visitors back year after year. Positioned on the South West Coast Path, Lynton provides an excellent base for exploring the landscapes and attractions of North Devon as well as a variety of cafés, pubs, and restaurants catering to a range of tastes and budgets. Lynton and Lynmouth's shopping areas are refreshingly independent, free from national chains and fast-food outlets. Instead, the high street features art galleries, gift shops, and unique clothing boutiques. Within a 30-minute drive, many of North Devon’s top attractions can be easily reached. These include the award-winning beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde, and Saunton Sands, known for their golden sands and excellent surf. Also nearby is Ilfracombe, a charming Edwardian resort with a scenic harbour and historic tunnel beaches, and Clovelly, a traditional fishing village where donkeys are still used to transport goods along its steep cobbled streets.
The local area offers a wide range of cafés, pubs, and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. Within a three-minute walk of the Penthouse, guests will find several highly regarded restaurants including The Vanilla Pod, The Oak Room and The Kensington, together with two pubs serving food, The Crown and The Queens. A variety of cafés nearby offer breakfasts, brunches, light lunches, and traditional Devon cream teas. Down in Lynmouth, additional options include gastro pubs such as The Mariners, The Rock House and The Blue Ball, while Fruits de Mer is served at Mad4Seafood, and fine dining can be found at the renowned Bonnicott House Hotel and Michelin-accredited Rising Sun. A 15-minute walk along a lit riverside path leads to The Nartnapa at Barbrook, which serves authentic Thai cuisine in a scenic setting. While for special occasions, Kentisbury Grange - a luxury hotel and restaurant, is just a 20-minute drive or short taxi ride away. Excellent fish and chips are widely available throughout the region, particularly in Lynmouth where award-winning fare can be found at Esplanade, overlooking the harbour. Most venues are family-friendly, and Lynton has several cafés that cater to older children, offering milkshakes, smoothies, paninis and more.
Lynton is right at the start of the South-West Coast Path and with its selection of pubs and restaurants, it's not only the ideal base from which to explore North Devon, but also boasts a wealth of activities in its own right. One 'must see' is Lynton's Cliff Railway - not only a marvel of Victorian Engineering, but a world-famous attraction in its own right, as the highest and steepest water-powered railway in the world! The funicular has run consistently since it opened in 1890 and it's now a Grade II listed working heritage railway, and is one of only three examples left in the world. It features 862ft of steep track and an elevation of 500ft! Another world-famous attraction is The Valley of the Rocks walk, which is easily accessed from Penthouse Lynmouth Bay and offers breath-taking views of the coast, together with dramatic rock formations all the way. The Watersmeet walk - where the East Lyn River meets Hoar Oak Water in the most picturesque way possible, is a beautiful scenic walk. There are a number of paths to choose from, but each will take you through ancient woodland alongside the crashing waters of the two rivers. The twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth both feature pedestrianised shopping areas offering a wealth of art galleries, independent shops and artisans selling locally produced craft items, such as hand-made candles, soaps, jewellery and wood crafts. Lynton also boasts its own unique heritage cinema, allowing visitors to take a step back in time, while viewing current movies. Children's films are regularly screened during school holidays, and the town also benefits from a toy museum, as well as the Lyn & Exmoor Museum which is housed in one of Lynton's oldest surviving cottages. Lynmouth meanwhile, plays host to a permanent exhibition covering the town's flood disaster of 1952, which is free of charge and another 'must-do' experience in the town. Just a few minutes drive from Lynton is Woody Bay Station, where visitors can take a scenic journey on a beautifully restored steam train, through the region's picturesque countryside, while other famous local attractions such Exmoor Zoo with its legendary Beast of Exmoor, and Arlington Court, with its beautiful grounds and unique carriage museum, are only about a twenty minute car ride away. Slightly further afield, but still within easy travelling distance of Penthouse Lynmouth Bay, are a host of attractions including stately homes such as Dunster Castle, gardens such as RHS Rosemoor, cycle paths such as the Tarka Trail, the Unesco Heritage Site of Lundy Island, plus jeep safaris, water safaris, boat trips and a host of scenic walks around the South West Coast Path. Not forgetting of course, the glorious sandy beaches and crashing waves of Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands.
The whole of North Devon is a walker’s paradise, and Lynton & Lynmouth are ideally situated to provide the perfect base from which to explore. Lynton Cottage (of which the Penthouse occupies two of the top floors), was originally built to enable its owner to easily walk between the towns, whilst enjoying the beautiful views. If you’re planning to do any walking at all, you really couldn’t ask for a better location! Lynton Cottage is actually situated on North Walk itself. Turn right out of the driveway, and you are literally minutes from the start of the Valley of the Rocks walk, a flat pathway with uninterrupted stunning sea views on the coastal side and dramatic rock formations on the other. Less dramatic but no less beautiful, are the selection of paths leading to Watersmeet. Accessed from Lynmouth, the walks lead to the point where two rivers combine, served by a National Trust café & shop in an old fishing lodge. The scenery on both the woodland and riverside walks is lovely at any time of year, changing with the seasons to show the English countryside at its picture-perfect best. Within half an hour’s drive of Lynton you can reach some of the best beaches in the whole country. Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands beaches all offer miles of golden sand and crashing waves. Idyllic for sunbathing and a perennial lure for families, the beaches are beautifully maintained, providing a restful haven on sunny days. Surfing is popular all year round, and tuition and hiring facilities are easily obtained. The beaches are flanked by sand dunes, and are blissfully free from the noise of road traffic. For those preferring a less remote seaside experience though, Minehead is ideal. It boasts a traditional seaside promenade, with the beach running along the front of the town itself. It’s more accessible for those with mobility issues, and allows sunbathers to make full use of the town’s facilities throughout the day. There is a large Butlins there, and visitors are able to purchase guest passes for the day.
